: I am wondering if there may be a buyer out there for my flyer collection
: ...mainly from 1989 to 1995... in plastic sleeves
: also a large box of european/aussi flyers, and my lovely a3 collection
: plus 2 boxes of the a6 type.
: most are mint, many have doubles.
: i would say there are 20,000 individual flyers.
: i will provide a list
: just wondering if it would be possible to sell as one lot
: or would i have to break it down.

hi Disco Biscuit,

seeing as there's only been one reply here so far to your query, thought i'd offer a few thoughts on it, tho selling large collections is a bit of an unknown

starting with other large collections i've heard about which have been put up for sale -

* in November 2002, a news release was circulated stating "Elegant collection of 25,000 flyers from Belgium, Denmark, England, Germany
and The Netherlands valued by Angelflyers at £1.00p GBP each and acquired by
Angelflyers at £5,000 GBP" - i've no more info on this... dates and condition unknown - also unknown is what Angelfyers bases its valuations on

* on 10th March 2004, Wayne Anthony (Class of 88) left message here"flyer collection sale" advertising collection for sale - "... Just to let everyone know that i'm selling my flyer collection to the highest bidder. In region of 1,000 flyers and bidding must start at £15,000..." and a few days later (same thread) left a follow-up - "I have someone thats made a bid but it's five grand short..." - i don't know what happened next

* on 14th April 2004 Pete Woodward started a thread here "Entire Collection For Sale" checking out whether anyone was intested in buying his collection of between 5,000 and 10,000 flyers, suggesting £3,000 as a starting offer - i don't know whether he received any serious offers

* there's been several 1000+ flyer sales on eBay during the last 12 months -

- 278.00 paid for 1000 x 89-96 M (Apr 04)
- 101.05 paid for 1000+ x early-mid 90s, 2 of each (Jan 04)
- 93.00 paid for 1000+ x 91-99 G-M (Aug 03)
- 88.89 paid for 1000+ x 91-95 EX (May 04)
- 51.00 paid for 2000+ x 90s + mags (Feb 04)
- 10.50 paid for 1000+ hc/d&b/house/garage/techno 96-04 (Jun 04)
- 4.35 paid for 1000 house/garage 94-97 (incl dupl) (Feb 04)

the eBay prices are much lower than for the private sales, perhaps partly due to the fact that the flyers they contain are less collectible

as to selling your own collection, using eBay, you'd probably raise the most money by selling the rarest flyers individually and selling the rest in sets based (eg) on events/venues/designers etc - but the time and effort involved would be considerable, and would likely turn into a full-time job for a few months

or you could check out privately what regular flyer dealers such as OneLove, Phatmedia, Beach etc would be prepared to pay - also Angelflyers may still be interested in buying collections

however given the desirability of your own collection, it may be worth exploring the possibility of using one of the major auction houses, such as Sotherby's or Christie's, which might attract the attention of general dealers in memorabilia and institutions (museums, galleries etc) - if so, then you could advertise the sale in advance online (perhaps putting up a web page with the details) and also in other media, such as mags read by top DJs and promoters who were involved in the 90s dance scene and who may have the spare cash and the necessary interest

listing your complete collection is a major task... i'm all in favour, being an inveterate list-maker, but to be truthful i'm not sure how much it will add to the value, except for the early/rarer flyers

hope this helps a little

Weed
